The famous shootout from Sam Peckinpah's great 1969 film "The Wild Bunch". Obviously, this will have spoilers, so I'd advise that people who haven't seen the film should avoid watching it.

The final showdown could be an allegory of the "Death and the end of the wild west" period.

Still Pike and his gang shows them not to mess with aging gunslingers. Just four of them and they nearly killed off those Mexican militia.

The Wild Bunch isn't a Spaghetti Western. It is very revisionist but to qualify as a Spaghetti Western is has to have been made in Europe. That said, this is clearly influenced by Sergio Leone right down to the choice of the Texas/Mexico Borderlands for a setting and the ambiguous moral tone. But it diverges in that the characters lack the superhuman shooting skills so often seen in the films of Leone or Corbucci, and the violence is fairly realistic, if extreme.

I wish Crazy Lee (Bo Hopkins) had made it out of the bank and been with them! I also wish Deke Thornton, T.C. and Coffer had ended up fighting alongside them in the end!

One of my favorite scenes is after the shootout, Robert Ryan is sitting down and Edmund O'Brien comes along and asks Ryan what he has planned. O'Brien says, "we're going down to Mexico, its not like it was but its good enough." They know their era is over but it was a good run.

WB is not exactly a western while it's commonly categorized so. "The Searchers" definitely is but that's among those Ford-classics I find grossly overrated.

Beat any movie thats made today. However, Appaloosa was a pretty damn good western and I'm shocked it followed book exactly almost 100 percent. It was more 95 percent. get a 5 point deduction because in real life,a shotgun cartridge can't send someone lying several feet into the air.
