When the Taliban attacked the shrines of Rahman Baba, Data Sahib, and Abdullah Ghazi Shah, slaughtering hundreds who had gathered for alms or to pray, Laal felt obligated to not only defend the progressive aspects of sufi thought but to discover them for ourselves. We see sufi's as the rebels, the revolutionaries of their period.

The entire mode of production of the pre-capitalist period, and village life to this day, was built on the caste system. And this system of zaat and beraderi itself is premised upon marriage within the beraderi, that is, on endogamy. Patriarchy and control of women's sexuality is the basis of the entire edifice.

In a word, the caste system relegates love or ishq to the most contemptible position. But that which was contemptible to the beraderis, became the battle cry of the sufis, Ishq became divine. Thus, Heer Varis Shah begins with the words: "Awal hamd khuda da vird kariyay, ishq kita su jag da mool mian,
Pehlan aap hi rabb ne ishq kita, Te mashooq he nabi rasool mian." How can love be a sin, if the worth of the world is love, if God is the first lover, if Muhammed is the first beloved.

Here is Laal's tribute to one of the earliest rebels in this tradition, Ghulam Fareed of Pakpattan.

  • i dont understand the basis of poetry or music but this one tranced my inner ..... makes me sad too that we go mad for noisy music and artifical beats and often ignore the kalams of our respectable saints . fantastic effort LAAL , priceless combination

  • @xtradown2009 Thank you :)

  • Good effort and pragmatic, sufi islam sits in the way of the Salafi interpretaion, it poses a challenge to the rising extremism sponsored by wahabi and salafi school of thought. Its imperitive that pluralism within Islam prevails to keep things in balance. Its an asset to the subcontinent, an intricate mix of theology and tradition.

Good work Taimour and all those involved in making of this video!

  • Yes that is exactly why we did this video.

  • Lovely Music!! Beautifully Sung!!

  • The lyrics show how deep uth fareeda jharoo de maseed very deep

  • I heard you sing this at LUMS and I've been looking for it ever since. Found it finally, great moving music. Pushes me on in my belief although I know my perception of this song is hugely divergent from yours. Nevertheless, great, passionate music.

  • I do not want to dishearten them by being critical to these young lads' effort. But as constructive criticism I would say their words, music, images, do not produce any impact at all. I would suggest that they undergo (if interested) a lot more training and choose better messages to sing to and finally... better not rush to produce "some utube video" just for the heck of it.

  • no tune , no melody and the music sucks and on top of it all. the laal members are dead paindo and ugly looking specially the lead singer .. he looks a bit retarded to me :D

  • best Taimur ever sung.

  • Very good choice of kalaam.....amazing!

  • very nice effort..

Keep it up guys.. you are doing a great job..!!

Thanks for sharing this beautiful piece

  • @Uroojinator "Daadhay" as in greater, and probably in this instance means "almighty" ........ read the English translation at 02:12. A translation would be something to this effect, "Fareed you mere mortal you can fall asleep but the one you love is always awake, you have affiliation with an almighty that is always awake." that is my understanding on the poetry line that you have highlighted, can any one else shed some light on it ?
