I woke up this morning to the news that one of my professors from college, Professor J. Hodge Markgraf, had died in the night.

Professor Markgraf was one of the most brilliant people I have ever had the occasion to meet. Both as a scientist and as a human being, he was truly extraordinary. (For some of his best quotes, check out this website: http://faculty.washington.edu/crowther/Teaching/hodge.shtml)

In his letter announcing this news, the President of Williams College, Morty Schapiro, wrote:

"Though still physically and intellectually vigorous, Hodge never seemed completely the same after the death last August of his beloved wife, Nancy. That he left us so soon after should perhaps be not so surprising; it is, in fact, in its own way touching."

After reading this, I spent the morning with this song slowly turning over in my head. My friend Eddie Murphy wrote it when we were freshmen at college. It has always been one of my favorites of his.
