Of course, if he (Bismarck) had just given the French a small fine, or perhaps even none at all, and allowed the people of Alsace-Lorraine to vote on their own status in a democratic referendum (which would have been the fair, equitable thing for all parties involved), then Franc-German tension might have been greatly decreased, and a major flashpoint for WW1 might have been avoided. This is not to say that the war might have been prevented entirely, but far fewer people would have died.

@Elberiver11 More on Bismarck: google "Treaty of Frankfurt." People in Alsace-Lorraine were forced to renounce French citizenship in favour of a German passport, or else they had to leave that region. As well, France had to pay over 5 billion francs, even though Bismarck had largely provoked the war with the tampered Ems dispatch. Bismarck may have done progressive things in terms of social welfare and labour programmes in Germany, but his foreign policy was shortsighted.

@Elberiver11 (sorry, a typo: "told HIM that..." rather than "me.")

@Elberiver11 ...a moving scene at Appomattox schoolhouse where Gen. Robert Lee surrendered, Ulysses Grant and other Northern officers told me that the Southerners could keep their horses because it was Spring and they needed to plow their fields. This forward-oriented, "turn the other cheek" thinking was a big difference between the New and Old World, as the latter was mired in ancient hatreds and vengeance.

@Elberiver11 re: Versailles. Yes, I agree with you; a more lenient treaty could have reduced Franco-German tensions considerably. As well, if Bismarck hadn't imposed a huge fine on France in 1871, and unilaterally seized Alsace-Lorraine, then he wouldn't have totally alienated France and set up decades of Franco-German hostility.
The problem in Europe is that each war set the stage for the next. After the U.S. civil war, Abe Lincoln avoided oppressing or exploiting the U.S. South. In...

@torbk When German troops entered Ukraine, most Ukrainians intially welcomed them as liberators from Stalin. However, due to anti-Slav racism, most of the Germans started oppressing the locals, forcing them to reluctantly side with Stalin again.
A similar thing happened when Japanese troops took Burma from the Brits. Most Burmese welcomed them as liberators, but the Japanese started to pillage and rape like they did to other "inferior Asians", and this inspired resistance to new occupier.

@georgewest96 Elberiver11 is a hypocrite. He minimizes the appalling devastation the French suffered in WW1 (e.g. "Boo-hoo, the poor French...they were all anti-German chauvinists, so they deserved it.") However, if one were to similarly stereotype and overgeneralize about Germans (ie. "All Germans were racist Nazi bigots, so they deserved the devastation they got in WW2.") then he'll apply a double-standard.
