I got this as a download, so I don't know much about the time or place of this recording. I know it's on a Smithsonian Folkways album.
It shares some lyrical content with Vera Hall's Awful Death (or Death have Mercy), which is particularly interesting to me.

If you have any info about this recording (especially the year) please share it with me.

Photo is of Dock Boggs, yes he is playing a banjo, and you know what? Banjos are awesome, no matter what anyone else says.

Wow!! over thirty thousand views!! I'm glad so many people have given this a listen. There are many other folks worthy of listening to on my other videos, so give 'em a chance.

  • Love Dock Boggs.

The picture is him late 1927 about the time he was recording for Brunswick.

This song was recorded by Mike Seeger (Petes brother) in 1963 and released on Folkways.

SmithsonianFolkways are reissuing all the Folways back catalogue. They have a channel on YouTube. Well worth a visit.

  • Thanks so much for the info!
