@xwaystranger I know you posted this comment a while ago, but I sort of just wanted to ad my two cents. I have one of her books and in it she actually says exactly what you just said. Shamans were Chosen by the Spirits, not just people that volunteered their time. As one of the other people pointed out, she does not view/call herself a True Shaman, but a Practicioner of Shamanism. You can practice Shamanism without being one, just as you can practice Wicca without being initiated.
@xwaystranger I have to disagree with the 'have to be' comment, stuff can start happening to people for all sorts of different reasons, sometimes the reason is not obvious. In some traditional cultures there may be 'rules' such as yours there but these can vary a great deal, also in the Western world the 'call' can take many forms.
It's a shame that there is so much bickering here, it seems to me that if as many people practiced spirituality as argued about it the world would be a better place.
@xwaystranger Well excuse her all to hell for trying to practice shamanism you self-righteous twit. Are you the fucking shaman police or just some jerk with a hard on for trust funders.
@bmbenblog Not a suspicion. I remember when and where she started. There are NO volunteers for the shamanic path. NONE. She is a New Age volunteer who took a class with Harner. And yes, he is not a shaman either. So we have non shamans beating on drums and charging for their Non Shaman trustfund activities for other wealthy Marin volunteers. Its no wonder that shamanism is now just another Therapy. And real magic is being drained from the world on cruises to the Amazon for the weekend.
@xwaystranger That would be why she does NOT call herself a shaman. Look at her other videos. She is a Shamanic Practitioner, believing that the methods of shamanism, not the pure indigenous practices, are good for our modern culture. Your suspicion that she is a "Bay Area Trustfunder" shows that you came into this discussion with prejudice. Most of the core-shamanic practitioners speak in an unapologetic metaphorical way.
Sandra "became" a shaman in the mid 90's. I suspect she was another Bay Area Trustfunder, who needed a hobby. To be a shaman in any other culture means you are also very familiar with death and the shadow side of life. A journey to the real underworld entails years of disciplined training, not just a drum circle. Real Shamans are born, there are NO volunteers for shamanism. No classes. You have to be found by a Seer, and then activated into shamanism.

@bmbenblog The Power that you don't have. Otherwise, you would SEE the exact same thing. The Truth.

@xwaystranger And what great power gave you the authority to make such decisions?
