  • It was a community outreach event, and the school that came to watch chemistry demonstrations was in a predominantly African American community. It was a lot of fun!

  • He's demonstrating Charles' Law, which states that there is a direct relationship between temperature and pressure. As the liquid nitrogen (77K or -320 degrees F) inside the 2-liter bottle warms up to the temp of the water (294K or about 70 degrees F) in the trash can, the pressure builds until it exceeds the pressure the bottle can withstand. The explosion is the result of gaseous nitrogen trying to expand. See... It's chemistry!
