Good question Dan. We live in the suburbs (used to be more rural but no more) We hate the city & spend vacations in the country. Hope to move someday soon. I could probably name a dozen or more but here goes:
1. Anywhere near or around the Smokies (our favorite get-away spot)
2. Bryson City, NC (and waterfall country)(want to live here)
3. Mt. Leconte Lodge
PS. Love to eat at the Log Cabin Pancake House in Gatlinburg. (just had to throw that in) ;)

1. Townsend, TN
2. Appalachian Museum in Norris TN
3. Elkmont/Cades Cove in the Smokies
and 4. Mt. Airy (Mayberry, NC)
I know that is 4 but they are my favorites. :)

This is a good question.
1. Anywhere around Cumberland Gap, Tn. that includes Wilderness Road State park.
2. Cades Cove in the Smokies
3. I'm still thinking,...
...anywhere close by (hour drive or two)where there is not a lot of people:D

i like to go to canida, china, mexico.
First I wanted to say thanks for the great vids and your unique perspective on our culture. Three "country" places: Areas surrounding Marquette Iowa, El Dorado County California, and the French Azilum in Pennsylvania are all must visits.

Thanks bobi, we loved the area up near Gettysburg. You should check out (FoamHenge) on 81 it is near Natural Bridge on 81 in VA, there is also a very cool Safari there, its a nice diversion if you are in the area anyway.
I just read a book called Far Appalachia, about a trip up the New River that might be worth checking out before your trip.
