Paul McCartney is doing his part in fighting climate change. He's taking a 'Meat-Free Monday' campaign to European lawmakers, urging them to reduce consumption to help fight global warming.

Taking to the political stage, former Beatle Paul McCartney is taking his 'Meat-Free' campaign to the European Union.

In the countdown to the Copenhagen Climate summit, the vegetarian Brit singer is drumming up support to wean people off meat.

McCartney told parliamentarians that cutting out meat just one day a week could be a key weapon in the fight to curb CO2 emissions.

[Paul McCartney, British Singer, The Beatles]:
"I urge you each of you to do your bit, for your people, for their children and for the planet they will inherit. Do meat free one day."

Sustainable food policy isn't on the Copenhagen agenda - McCartney says it should be.

He argues that meat production on a mass scale causes more CO2 emissions than transport.

The ex-Beatle is campaigning for a 'Meat Free Monday', which, he says, offers a simple, pain-free way of making a substantial difference.

[Paul McCartney, British Singer, The Beatles]:
"I think if you suggest to people one day - you know most people have had a kind of a blow out at the weekend, and Monday they go to the gym. So I am suggesting they could also cut out meat on that day, it could be a good day to do it."

McCartney kicked off his campaign in the British capital earlier this summer.

It has also been launched in the United States and Australia.

But the ex-Beatle has angered farmers at home, who accuse him of giving "simplistic sound bites" that won't solve the problem of climate change.
