The Ryder Lake Amphibian Protection Program is a systematic monitoring approach which aims to identify migration patterns of the Western Toad from forested upland habitats to breeding wetlands and back to the upland. Currently in the Ryder Lake region there are three known adult migrations for the Western Toad; also a migration of the juvenile toads from the breeding wetlands to the forested upland.
The Western Toad Rescue is an event that occurs when the juvenile toads migrate from the wetland to the forest across a busy road way in the Ryder Lake area. During which FVC cautions drivers to be weary of these tiny travellers and take a suggested detour. The current migratory route has caused high counts of vehicular mortality for the juveniles. In an effort to better understand and map the migratory paths of this endangered species the monitoring program has been established. The monitoring program includes mapping migration routes of both the adult and juvenile western toad.
Project Objectives:
1. Understand the migration route of the Western Toad
2. Suggest and determine appropriate sustainable solutions for the migrating amphibians
3. Collaborate with the City and Community to implement the long-term solutions.
