The Vietnam War was fought for the defense of democracy. Ten long years of vicious combat -- including the Tet Offensive and bloodshed at Hue and Saigon --permanently embedded the Vietnam War in the American consciousness.

  • So the Vietnamese kicked Americas ass just how those Afghans and Iraqis are? People never learn do they and then they expect all the sympathy, America needs a real war with a super power like Russia or China to see how well they really are instead of being the big bully and picking on weaker countries same goes to Britain...

  • unfortunate that many today do not study history and all they know is video games. Real war is not a video game. there is no reset button. A great deal of time is spent waiting for things to pop of.

  • those poor people going thru hell , ive never seen kids so terrorised like that those poor little babys imagine if that was your family

  • The "real war" in Afghanistan lasted, what, days? I don't think I need to bring up the outcome of "the real war" in Iraq. This is a police action to squash insurgencies, not a conventional military force fighting another conventional military force. If you think a global conflict, which is what a war between super powers leads to, needs to break out for any reason other than absolute necessity, than you're a complete tool.

Also..I forgot to mention that this is on many documentaries of reputable origin and in no telling how many books. Right off the top of my head I know it's in Hubert Humphrey-The Art of the Possible, and also a mention in the History Channel's America at War-Vietnam on the Front Lines. I can't remember the others right now.

  • @Jantv81 LBJ tried to get us out. Nixon went behind everyone's back and basically committed treason, by asking Pres. Tu to not agree to sign anything negotiated by the U.S. govt. Nixon told Tu that he'd get a better deal if he held out. If he held out, then Hubert Humphrey wouldn't get elected...instead Nixon would...and then Nixon would get South Vietnam a better deal. LBJ found out about this via CIA I think. There's a recording on youtube where he talks to Ev. Durkson about it.

  • You have to wonder how well these marines were trained...they never seem to take cover in firefights, there tripping over each other coming out of the landing crafts, the man standing on the front of the tanks at 9:03 was lucky his head wasn't taken of by the chain that tank broke of the landing craft.

  • What pisses me off is that Kennedy did not want a war over there, and was doing what he could to keep the peace while fighting communism. We go over there with Johnson's administration controlling it with minimum military decision control- we lost this war because we were trying to spread true democracy in a communist country. This war could have been avoided if those like LBJ not forcing another country to think the same as the US. Iraq- you think we would have learned something from history.
