This phenomenon occurs (an ant mill) during migration of a colony when the main body of ants loses the pheromone (homrone) trail produced by the 'leader' ants. They then start following each other and can form a circle in which each ant follows the ones in front endlessly. This can result in the death of the colony.
Did these ants end up dying?

@altish - mate, the whole "suicidal lemmings" thing has been debunked years ago.

= terrifying. Ants, I will get you if it's the last thing I do!
"Sometimes ants following the scent of other ants get locked in a never ending circle called a circular mill. The circle of ants, each one following the ant in front, may continue until they all die." A bit like lemmings I suppose? If I saw that in my backyard though I would still just assume the world is ending, despite what the internet might say.

I've seen single ants run in a circle, but that's when they are ill or in some way a danger to the colony. They run in a circle until they exhaust themselves to death, but thousands of ants doing the same thing... no idea. Google doesn't help me either!
