Yeah pretty much, just you got the names the wrong way round..
the sound in this ad is the FM chip but the version most of us heard (well in Europe anyways) used the standard PSG....
FM chip is built-in to the Japanese Master System.....R-Type is one a few games that supported it...California Games is another one..

Looks like the R-Type monster was inspired by the H.R. Geiger Alien creatures.

Is this the jap PSG version of tthe MS music they use in the advert, the Pal game music (FM music chip I think) sounds very different.
