This is a mathematical ה ס פ ד (eulogy)
for my great mentor and influencer, Leon Ehrenpreis, who has
made fundamental contributions to mathematics, including the
seminal theorem about the existence of a Fundamental solution to
any partial linear differential operator with constant
coefficients and the amazing statement, and proof, of the
so-called Fundamental principle. I will illustrate his beautiful
ideas by presenting discrete analogs, where things get much
simpler, and Leon's beautiful ideas shine out in their bare
beauty, without the "continuous" distracting background noise,
so no knowledge of analysis is needed to understand this talk.
