"Kabutarkhana's" are famous landmarks in Mumbai city especially the "Dadar Kabutarkhana" which dates back to 1933 and built by Valamji Ratanshi Vora and is today managed by a group of 6 trustees. This area is surrounded by a "Jain Temple", a "Hanuman Temple", a "Mosque" and a "Cross" and considered a "Holy Spot", also a bottleneck for traffic congestion in the area. It has been declared a heritage spot by the Government and is akin to "Trafalgar Square" in London, a major tourist attraction for locals as well as tourists. Feeding of the "Trafalgar Square Pigeons" was banned in 2003 and in 2009,the Mayor of Mumbai Dr Shubha. Raul had plans to alter the architecture of the present Kabutarkhana at Dadar in order to make it more hygienic and reduce traffic congestion but the same was opposed by most people, hence the "Dadar Kabutarkhana" still exists in its present form, as constructed in 1933.These pigeons consume about 1500Kgs of grain daily eating grain like Jowari,Channa,Moong, bajra and makali at the "Dadar Kabutarkhana". The "Dadar Kabootarkhana Trust" raises the funds for feeding these pigeons which comes from wholesale shops at Crawford Market and the APMC(Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee) vegetable market at Vashi. Apart from feeding, these pigeons are also nursed back to health when they fall sick by veterinarians from the Parel based " Bombay Veterinary college" who visit the "Dadar Kabootarkhana" daily between 0800-1000hrs and 1900 to 2000hrs, The pigeons are also fed "Multi-vitamins" which are diluted in water in order to boost their immunity to diseases. Majority of those who feed pigeons at Dadar are Jains who pray at the temple opposite the Kabootarkhana and carry a "Channa Box" to feed the pigeons just as Hindus feed cows which are tethered outside temples. My house gallery at Prabhadevi not very far from "Dadar Kabutarkhana" was itself a home for a pair of roosting pigeons in the 1980's and 1990's, and numerous pigeons were born from this pair as pigeons breed profusely .My famous talking parakeet "Mittoo" enjoyed their companionship as they roosted on the cupboard roof next to his cage. This pair was also very territorial and would fight and chase away any newcomers attempting to usurp their "Nesting Turf'" in my house akin to "Cockfights".I even documented their behaviour and breeding in my notes, also observing that pigeons mate for life as a pair, never changing partners, unless one of them dies. This video of the "Dadar Kabutarkhana" in Mumbai was filmed on Saturday(6-3-2010).:- Seafarer/Blogger/backpacker/animal welfare activist Rudolph.A.Furtado.
