Sunday(13-2-011):- Competitors assembled early in the morning at the "MET Grounds" in Bandra reclamation for the start of the "Mumbai Cyclothon-2011".It was a display of "Cycling Fashion" and expensive cycles, a sport that is quickly gaining a fan following among the wealthy and middle-class in Mumbai.International brand cycles like "Trek" and "Firefox" are retailed in India, some costing upwards of Rs 1 lakh and more, a price unheard just a decade ago, whrn cycles were a poor mans mode of transport and an eccentric sport for a few wealthy.Mumbai roads are very cycle unfriendly as there are no cycling tracks, hence cycling can only be done in early morning hours before sunrise or late in the night after sun-set to avoid road motorized traffic and accidents.Cycling during peak Mumbai traffic hours is confined mostly to the poorer labour working class hawkers and "Dabbawalla's" , expert cyclists, whose balancing skills with heavy loads on their robust "Atlas cycles" is akin to watching a tight rope-walk act in a circus. In recent years, akin to the developed economy's , a few dare-devil wealthy cyclists do cycle to work as a means of physical fitness and environment concern.
