Argentina has become the first Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriage. The Senate approved the new law early Thursday after more than 16 hours of debate. (July 15)

Argentina has always had the reputation of having the most educated populace in Latin America. Now they are the most progressive and enlightened in civil rights, secular reason, and equality for all of its population. Together with Mexico City, beacons of acceptance and common sense in an otherwise intolerant and homophobic continent influenced by religious bigotry.
