This is an interesting study of acting techniques..

This piece taken from an advert, played by Anthony Hopkins and is the result of 2 hours work, on my kitchen table, from start to finish and has many imperfections which I think are useful to anyone who is trying to perfect the craft. Your constructive comments are welcomed. Also If you have a monologue you would like me to do, in my journey please, let me know.

The biggest flaw with this piece are the lines. I am not totally comfortable with them. I learned them 10 minutes before filming. They are not yet part of me. This is why I look stiff and wooden even though the delivery is quite natural and in my own voice.

Peaking. There are some words where I peak in tone. I loose my natural voice. This again is down to not being comfortable with the lines.

Paraphrasing. The monologue is not word for word as written and there are bits missing and bits I made up. Again lines, lines, lines !

Character. I haven't thought through my character. Where am I ? Who am I ? Where have I come from ? Where am I going ? My Physicality. Again this adds to my stiffness and blank expression.

Interline pauses and variation. There are these present but these could be much improved.

  • I enjoyed watching this. I have to perform a monologue for an agency in september. I dont know how to prepare or what sort of monologue to choose. Do you have any advice??

  • Soz for the slow reply...

    My advice is this.

    1. Pick a monolgue that suits your character. There are lots on the internet that you can get for free.

The skill is to make it as natural as possible. If you have not already looked at the Michael Caine acting videos on YouTube they are worth watching.

  • 2..Do not do a monolgue that is common or ppl are familiar with (unless you have been given the monologue). Ppl have a preconceived idea of how it should sound. So be orignal and the will have no expectations.

    3. If they have said 3 minutes this really means you have UPTO 3 minutes. A 1 minute monologue can be as effective as a 3 minute one.

If you have a camera and you can film yourself doing your piece I will be happy to give you some feedback.

    Go For It !

    Cheers.

  • Thanks for the comments guys. Its very encouraging...cheers

  • I like it. You don't blink a single time.. I know it is a choice you made.

Only thing is that it is also camera technique video.. Im talking about the slow zoom.

  • lol

  • what's with the dissolves?

Can't you deliver 30 seconds without a transition?

Definitely you can hold the camera's eye (granted any melodramatic actor can with great creative), but you do yourself an injustice by cheating with transitions.

AGAIN! ONE TAKE! IF YOU CAN'T, GIVE UP ACTING!

and, if you take on a delivery by a master (AH), YA BETTER DO IT BETTER!

I give you this advise ... what will you make of it?

  • You never mentioned the "BIG" blowjob? But that would depend upon if your bozak was "BIG"? For getting a "BIG" BJ, would actually not depend upon how big your Bozak is, but how experienced the BJ'er is...It might be good to try your monologue once again and include this mention or at least ponder it, and have another go at it...Good day mate! :-]

  • finally someone who can deliver a monologue right.

  • your eyes are too dead

  • thats cool, looks very professional, it has encouraged me to try my hand at it, im not an actor but it was fun. I see now how hard it can be and appreciate the work gone into this.
