In an informal interview/conversation, recorded at the home of European D.J Hans Vangkilde, Judy Garland responds to a press report about a supposed overdose with a little humor, a little annoyance, and a lot of dignity. She also discusses Fran Jeffries, the price of bread, and being touched by a cab driver.
@hirchik I was expecting you to contact me in time for Valentines Day. That said, I have to hand it to you. Here you were, calling me a know-it-all, so I thought you admired my lifelong love of reading, gathering information from reliable sources and sharing facts. I was absolutely preening from your compliment! Then my heart sank. Why, what's this? The word "not!" That negates what came before! Your sly wit sails over my head. I'm so grateful that you keep engaging me in conversation.

The people who knew Judy and spent time with her in the last year of her life knew that she was going to die soon, not from barbiturate poisoning but from severe liver disease. Had it not been for her body failing her she would have survived this big boo boo at the medicine cabinet. I think God couldn't take watching her live in misery and depression and eternal stress any longer. So he in his mercy and wisdom took her to his bosom forever.

It is highly likely, Judy died from an accidental OD. Speaking from experience, when one has been addicted to Rx's long term, it is often difficult to remember how much you've taken and when. It is easy, especially with barbs and benzo's, to take repeated dosages because you've forgotten you'd already taken it. Add alcohol and it's a LETHAL combo. MOF, I'm expecting alcohol & benzo's to be the COD for Whitney H. once the results return. Anyway, always love Judy. RIP.

Except for her brief teenage marriage to David Rose, all Judy's husbands, even boyfriends, needed a break from her to get some peace, quiet and sleep, and retool for the slog ahead. Deans was no exception. It wasn't permanent, but Deans, after meeting the Vandekildes, saw the opportunity to split, stay at a hotel, and leave Judy in their care briefly. He took similar leaves of absence in London and New York, as well.

@defundthewar You mean Mickey Deans "ditched" her? That sounds so permanent. But they ended up back together. Could you elaborate on what you mean by "ditched?" Thanks.

Did Judy die of excessive alcohol consumption? no, she did not. She died of a drug overdose. The overdose could have been accidental or a suicide. There is too fine a line between taking too many and taking enough when taking pills. We will never truly know. As for the alcohol - with a life like that, who wouldn't want to try and block out the world? Judy was an addict of drugs at least. As far back as her nervous breakdowns and collapses during filming at mgm, there was evidence of it.

SURE it's a tragic life when you die at 47 after multiple suicide attempts, multiple marriages and history of pills/alcohol to the max. Always looking for love/happiness and it all eluding her due to addiction. Chemicals=first in her life. She was lured into this by many people more interested in $ than her welfare. But, bottom line is she DID make choices that took her life too early. What you are hearing is out & out denial. She probably doesn' remember a lot of what she is denying.
