these would be good drills to become a more explosive runner, but i was hopeing for more of a passing drill

good footwork and good leg strength is an important part of being a good passer.

For some of the drills, yes, a rope would work.
However, the Bullet Belt - "Pop" belt has a patented break-away feature that requires the athlete to exert a burst of effort to escape.
The "Rip" belt provides a gradual resistance over several steps, and the "Triple Pop" belt (perfect for the three step drop) requires the QB to exert punctuated effort at each back step. The Triple pop is also used by sprinters working to improve the explosiveness of their first three steps of the block.
