That's why police departments in the 1940s' favored Indians; thier right hand was free to draw thier service pistol easily if they had to.

They were left hand throttle as the shifter was on the right. I have a 1940 Chief myself.
The military and Police like Indians as you could pull your gun and keep a hand on the throttle.

You can choose...my 40 chief has a left hand shifter and a right hand throttle....it'not a hard work!

Growing up as a kid here in Argentina i remember in the dictionary under the definition of motorcycles there was a picture of a 40´s vintage Indian chief. truly the most beautiful motorcycle ever made. Sir i take my hat off in reverence!

Indian is the motorcycle of my dreams (of course, a Chief one). That 42° V-Twin sounds fantastic! I saw that at the starting-warming there is a choke-starter control that you handle, is it original or you added it? In the other hand, what do you think about new Indians, are they ok?

indians had left hand throttle. right hand ignition retard and advance for the autolite distributor. choke is on the carb.
