[From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - This is a very rare 1952 kinescope of one of Ernie's earliest TV shows, "Kovacs on the Corner". Shot at the old WPTZ studios on 1619 Walnut Street in Philadelphia (where "The Mike Douglas Show" also originated in the 60's and 70's), and broadcast over the fledgling NBC Television Network, it shows an early glimpse of some of the zany aspects of Kovacs' imagination. Appearing in this segment is The Dave Appell Trio singing "Undecided", written by Sid Robins and Charlie Shavers in 1938, and made famous by The Ames Brothers with Les Brown's Orchestra in 1951. The website IMDB.com offers this short bio: "Dave Appell started arranging for big bands in the mid 1940s, including Benny Carter and Earl "Fatha" Hines. Appell formed a group called "Dave Appell and the Applejacks" and went on to become the Music Director on the "Ernie Kovacs Show" in Philadelphia. In 1958, Kal Mann and Appell met at the Cameo/Parkway Records in Philadelphia. There they produced many records and collaborated on such hits as "Let's Twist Again" and "The Twist" (Chubby Checker); "Bristol Stomp" (Dovells); and "South Street" (Orlons)." Mr. Appell is still active and has his own website, http://www.daveappell.com , which includes some brief audio comments about him and Ernie. The costumed dog character is named "Alfred" and he is supposedly invisible, with only Ernie and the kids at home having the ability to see him. In this scene, Ernie tries to explain Alfred and Tondelaya the Cat to Edie. Wrapping up the segment is Edie's lovely rendition of the Richard Rodgers/Oscar Hammerstein II song "It Might As Well Be Spring" from the 1945 20th Century-Fox musical "State Fair".
