HIP-HOP: BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES is a riveting documentary that examines representations of gender roles in hip-hop and rap music through the lens of filmmaker Byron Hurt, a former college quarterback turned activist. Conceived as a loving critique from a self-proclaimed hip-hop head, Hurt examines issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in todays hip-hop culture.

  • The girls talking about how they weren't offended by being objectified reminded me of that Chris Rock standup bit. "If you ask any of 'em why they're not offended by what this dude is saying they all give you the same answer: 'HE AIN'T TALKING ABOUT ME!' SMACK HER WIT A DICK SMACK HER WIT A DICK"

  • Jadakiss sounds like a damned moron! His piece should have been edited out of this video. Busta, though a fool, at least answers the questions without sounding completely caught off guard.

  • Russell Simmons was very defensive when asked the question. Not surprising

  • Most rappers now are Bi-Sexual (GAY), thats why they have so many WOMEN (bitches, as they say) around them, cuz they have LOW self-esteem and they need to cover up the fact that they GAY!!! If they were not big artists, no girl would deal with most of them.

  • 25% of ALL black women in America are raped after the age of 18? I call bullshit, Byron Hurt.

  • all that has nothing to do with HIP HOP its things that are going on in life period, HIP HOP is not about that stuff thats just guys rapping not all rappers are hip hop anyone can pick up a mic and rap just like justin bieber is doing now, but they dont represent HIP HOP , it was made to bring positive to people, but people who started rapping that had no knowledge of hip hop they just want to be rap starts

  • "You cavemen insist on callin' your sister's a ho

you ain't equipped to paint the picture of a city I roam..."

    - Blue Scholars, Talk Story

Hella reminded me of that line.

  • Really? Saying something about it because it's politically correct, and actually doing something about it are two different things!

  • @blurelic4 you expected more from russel simmons? a man who would attach his name to something like the rush card? a cards which not only takes a portion of YOUR hard earned money, but does nothing to help your finacial/credit situation. he should know better than to peddle something like that, given the fact that many AA have such poor money money management issues and things like this only make it worse.

mr. simmons is about the dollar bill.

  • @DMJ9012 i don't think that they ignoring the women's involvement in the video. the women didn't show up to spelman asking for their help. nelly did. it strikes me as odd that he refused to have a sitdown with the the women who very well could have saved his sister's life. you can't ask someone for such a huge favor, then turn around and basically tell them that their opinions are so unimportant to you, that you can't even spare a few moments to hear what they have to say afterward.

  • If u tired of Seeing comments and youtube videos of How Hip/Hop is so degrading and disrepectful....Then please listen to mine....
