Just me playing the John Dunbar Theme from Dances With Wolves. It's a wonderful movie and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

This also marks the first time that I've played something completely by ear. I looked all over last night and couldn't find any sheet music for this, but I was determined, and so today I sat down at the keyboard for about an hour, worked out the melody, and then made up a left-hand part to go with it, then made this recording. So keep that in mind and go easy on me, it's not from sheet music, it's just from my head and it's my first time playing without any sheet music to reference to so it wasn't real easy for me. I just listened to the original and tried to make it sound close. Hope you enjoy!

Here's the original orchestral version that I used for reference:

  • Geeze, how long does it take you to learn a song?

I wish I had time to learn one everyday :(

    Bravo!

  • Thanks! I learned this one by ear, took about an hour and a half or so from the time I started figuring it out to when I made the recording. But if you listen closely there's not much to it, it's a very short melody and just repeats a bunch.

All of my other videos were learned from sheet music, most of the simpler ones like the LOTR ones take 2-4 days. Harder ones like Chopin Raindrop Prelude or Eyes On Me etc. can take a month or more.

  • @AnotherSchmoe

    Ahh, sounds about right :).

I've never really attempted to learn something by ear, I usually give up in the process :P

But as for sheet music, things I've been learning lately like Zelda themes take a day or two. Other songs take a few weeks, usually.

  • I also usually give up, this is the first time I've completed something by ear. I really wanted to play this one. It has a very simple but nice melody. Kind of a quiet frontier tune. Great movie too, not sure if you've seen it. If you haven't you need to! =P

  • @AnotherSchmoe

I haven't ever heard of it xD, I'll check it out ^.^

  • Ok, you'll need to set aside a good bit of time to watch it though. The theatrical cut is 3 hours long, I have the director's cut on DVD though and it's 4 hours, lol. Worth every minute though!

  • Definitely some wrong bass notes there... you gotta use your ear sometimes

  • I heard the notes were off :p read the comments and saw I was right. Weird because I last watched the movie 2 yrs ago. :P

  • Eb-Cm-Ab-Bb

    Ab-Eb-Fm-Bb.

Those are the chords for the first part. You played:

    Eb-Eb-Eb-Bb

    Cm-Eb-Ab-Bb

You played it really nicely though! :D

  • <3 <3 <3

  • Petites variantes dans l'accompagnement qui passent bien merci

  • Love this rendition of the theme!!

It's (in my opinion) the best movie ever made, I've seen it about 20 times.

Every time I do a little channel surfing on TV, and I only see a glimpse of the movie I flip back and watch it. No matter where they are in the movie I just keep watching it. Partially due to the beautiful soundtrack.

  • It would mean so much for me if you did a tutorial of this. Please do. It's my moms favorite song, and she's really sick. I want her to hear me play it before it's too late.

  • man i do love this song so much ! you played it very well . seeing your channel now to ear more of your great work . thanks

  • please make a tutorial, I managed to learn the right hand by ear but a tutorial would really help with the rest. and I'm sure thousands of people would like to learn this song :)
