opossums 8 weeks

Rescued baby opossum at 8 weeks old...this is why you should NOT go around killing wildlife in the spring. You end up making a rehabber lose a lot of sleep. :D This litter came to me with 2 boys and 2 girls, and are now doing fine. They should be ready to release in the fall. BTW, opossums DO NOT make good pets, no matter what you neighbor or your uncle tells you. They grow to be very friendly and loving if handled properly, but their nutritional and excersise requirements are IMPOSSIBLE to reproduce artificially. It is SELFISH and UNFAIR to insist that they spend their days in captivity. They will become ill, and they will die slow, painful deaths, even if they are your constant companion and they get plenty of attention. They are solitary animals, and do not learn to love other pets like cats and dogs do. These dudes walk 10 miles a night once they are grown - they dont really make possum-friendly treadmills, and obesity WILL KILL them. So, if you are considering keeping a cool exotic pet - PLEASE, JUST GO VISIT THE COUNTLESS HOMELESS ANIMALS AT YOUR LOCAL PET SHELTER OR RESCUE. What's wrong with a dog or cat? Thankfully, you dont have to catch slug for them to eat, like you must for a opossum...Ask yourself honestly whether you are looking out for the interest of the wildlife you've taken in, or just serving your own desire for novelty.

@bc2man I killed one today, but I used a dull ass butcher knife. Took like 10 minutes to kill the damn thing, and it was bloody. What did you use?

When raising orphaned opossum or possums its important that they get the correct gut flora. This is done by feeding them another possums scats, just a bit. Also if you want a clean possum its important to rub the genitalia gently with a tissue regularly which will stimulate them to go to the toilet. They are like Kangaroos etc and pee and poo from the one hole (sometimes they will just pee or vice versa). Their mum would do this while they are in the pouch to keep it clean. Use special milk only
