Terry Silverlight has been the drummer in the Lynn Welshman Tentet for several years. The band, led by trombonist Lynn Welshman who arranged all the charts, has been congregating in Manhattan on a regular basis. The late, great saxophonist Gerry Niewood was a colleague in this band. This video was recorded at one of those "get togethers" in 2005. A more recent gathering with this band occurred on February 12, 2009, which Gerry had to sub out due to a performance commitment he had with the Chuck Mangione group in Buffalo, New York. Gerry was the victim of the crash of Continental Connection Flight 3407 that day.
Personnel on this video: Gerry Niewood (soprano sax), Terry Silverlight (drums), Pete Yellin (alto sax), Glenn Drewes (trumpet), Keith O'Quinn (trombone), Joe Shepley (trumpet), Gary Topper (tenor sax), Lynn Welshman (trombone), Bob Kaye (piano), Chip Jackson (bass).
Back in 1971 or 72 I had the great pleasure of meeting Gerry when he did a show with the Chuck Mangione Quartet at my high school, West Seneca West Senior, West Seneca, NY (a suburb of Buffalo). They appeared at the behest of my music teacher who knew Chuck personally. I became a huge fan of Mangione and all of his musical associates from the "Friends & Love" and "Together" concert LP's. Gerry an all of the others signed them for me. Thanks for posting this "inside" look into his personal time
