I agree with the praise of the wonderful performers. But let's also not forget the composer Schumann, so underappreciated now as in his lifetime!

J'adore votre interprétation. Votre belle voix exprime bien tous les sentiments désirés.... quelle technique! Bravo

Schumann's wonderful lied requires a singer capable of such technical control and such emotion at the same time. Ameling has it all. She is so poetic in her feeling for the phrases. I believe she sang the role of Illia in Mozart's Idomeneo in Holland, but otherwise prefered to give concert performances.

Elly Ameling é divina!

Sublime. I strongly believe some composers meld better to certain singers' voices, and Schumann seems so perfectly suited to Ameling's. Wonderful performance. Thank you for posting!

Echo to quelasol and Azzenstudent. Ameling was not underrated. She was (and still is) regarded the foremost Lieder singer of our time. I think that was all she sang. I have an old LP of hers that was devoted to Mozarts opera arias and concert arias. But I seriously doubt that she ever performed in fully staged opera.
Bear in mind that this video was taken from a VHS tape from a television broadcast (The Casals Festival in Puerto Rico) with rather bad fidelity. I posted it to so others could see Ameling's charm. Ameling's voice while mature was still in its heyday and would not begin to show signs of age till her middle 50's. I'm glad others are now enjoying this video. Be sure to see the others Ameling videos I have posted- they're better!
