We used a 400 MHz GPR (ground penetrating radar) system to scan an agricultural area near Aachen, Germany, for old mining shafts. Lots of 0.5 m spaced 2D lines were combined to a 3D dataset for creating timeslices. The shaft appears as a rectangular structure in the lower right corner of the image. The straight line from upper left to lower right is a fault-bound slope; at a depth of approx. 0.6 m a utility becomes visible, crossing the investigation area from the lower left to the upper right.
t = two-way-traveltime [nanoseconds]
d = depth [meter] with wavevelocity v = 0.08 m/ns
For geophysical investigation it is always recommended to use and combine different methods. We applied a lot of geophysics to our investigation area:
- 400 MHz GPR
- 270 MHz GPR
- 100 MHz GPR
- 4 point DC Geoelectrics
- capacitive coupled Geoelectrics (OhmMapper)
- self potential
- magnetotellurics
