Guru Dr. Zahalan Bin Man shares his Islamic martial art, Silat Kalam, and his fascinating life philosophy of peace and gratitude with Brooklyn Monk, Antonio Graceffo. We eat because of God. We drink because of God. We practice martial art because of God. Guru Dr. Zahalan Bin Man wants people to remember how lucky they are that they can practice martial art, that they can walk, and speak, that they are not ill or suffering. He says that if we always remember to be grateful, we will be happier, healthier people.

In a Muslim community outside of Kuala Lumpur, in Selangor, Malaysia, Antonio explores a version of Silat, the many faced Malaysian martial art. Silat, as taught by Guru Dr. Zahalan Bin Man is a solid self-defense and combat martial art which uses a lot of stand up grappling. In Dr. Zahalans martial art, you never attack, but when your opponent attacks, you tie him up with his own limbs and kick him into submission.

  • Interesting. I've never seen this kind of Silat. Because Silat, honestly, has no connection with religions or whatsoever. Just spiritual philosophy that you mimic the movement of certain kinds of animals. And also is a culture of the Malay race(Indonesian, Malaysian, South Thai) as to Kung Fu and Karate is to the orientals.

  • strange comment. spiritual and religous are quite similar terms. the video was shot in malaysia, so i never claimed its not a malay art. finally malays, indonesians and tahis are also orientals. i really have no idea what you meant with this.

  • May ALLAH give all the people being oppressed and suffering injustices in this world patience, strength and show them mercy and give them guidance, including the shan people and palestinians.

  • @destroyxeverything Silat has connection with religions. Its in the higher level of silat, called batin, or maybe other name such as kanuragan. sometimes only the Malays(this term include Bugis,Java,Dayak and lots of other races in Malay archipelago) are allowed to learn this knowledge.Thats why, when some naive westerners come to SEA, and said something similar like what u said, we smiled and laugh secretly at them. The westerners come to South East Asia and suddenly an expert in Silat? :)
