Hmm, I'll have to say that the indirect costs of gas increases are higher prices for food and goods (many of them are shipped or flown from somewhere after all). That is also part and parcel of the increase in gas prices and I think that many people recognize that so I'm not sure this is as simple as the 'anchoring' effect at work and may be based in actual price increases relative to last year's cost of living.
