Bruce didn't leave until after Ricky and Blondie already joined the band, which happened in 1972 by the way. Dennis already had a replacement drummer - Mike Kowalski. And it wasn't just a touring band thing, because they wrote, played and sang on the albums.

The subtext to this story is that BB bassplayer Bruce Johnston left the band due to the afore-mentioned "new manager," & Dennis Wilson put his hand through a plate glass window during a drunken mishap, which rendered him unable to drum for a while, so two positions opened up in the BB's touring band during the 1971 - 74 time period.

Ricky was originally in a band from South Africa called the Flames. Carl Wilson saw the Flames when he was in London and decided to sign the Flames to the Beach Boys' label. The BBs had a new manager who wanted to make the group more racially diverse so they recruited two of the Flames (Ricky and also Blondie Chaplin) to be in the band.

Wow,thanks for showing! Its really weird there being a 'Beach Boy' in The Rutles! Rikki Fataar was a great drummer for The Beach Boys, don't suppose you happen to know how that come about?!

Thanks for posting! I was at the screening and it was nice to see this a little more close-up than I was in the theatre.
Apologies for the poor video quality -- celphone level AVI in a very dark space.
