  • Muldoon was a tired old drunk. Lange was a buffoon who thought being pm was about making funny speeches. Meanwhile Douglas and his mates high-jacked the country, ripped it off, and left the average idiot with the palliative idea that since we had gone anti-nuclear and were saving whales we had taken control of our destiny as a country (durrh). The 1984 election was the biggest sucker-punch in kiwi histoiry, and we have all been paying for it every day since.

  • @trevorx1960: Yes I don't suppose a well run Socialist Country could have been left standing during the Reagan Years either.

  • Muldoon was the worst thing that happened to NZ. His corruption was paramount - A great example was the Erebus disaster and the Mahon inquiry. A futher example was his blatant disrespect of the separation of powers doctrine which ensures NZ remains a democracy - i.e Fitzgerald v Muldoon. All I can say is I'm glad someone like him will never be in power again in this country.

  • I was the first to campaign for a referendum for proportional Representation to Government ministers of the day.

  • what program was this from?

  • It was used in a Doco about the TVNZ News service.

  • This is the first time I've heard "David Lange" and "Telegenic" in the same sentence.

  • Facts always terminates opinions!

  • @MrCameronBrewer na man thats because Muldoon was using a Keynesian based economic strategy just like the previous 50 years of other governments in Nz had, most of the lectures and professors at my Uni even openly admit, that though when he was in power shit hit the fan, but it wasnt his fault, it would not have mattered who was in power at that time, the same out come was always going to happen, and Lange yes by implementing neo-liberal policies, fundamentally changed Nz but at a cost

  • @ryanthomasmccallum ...Muldoon put New Zealand into bankruptcy

Muldoon failed to understand neoclassical economics, even to this day leaders still don't fully understand!

However fundamental flaws have be exposed by "Dr Steve Keen" is an Associate Professor in economics and finance at the University of Western Sydney.

    Wall-Street Protest will get worse!

  • @trevorx1960...Muldoon put New Zealand into bankruptcy’s. Since then Labour and National have sold off state assets, to the detriment of all kiwis. 1984 election allowed as to remove Muldoon and move towards MMP.

  • Muldoon did a great job, and especially when he didnt want to let the labour government take over straight away unless they promised to not change the value of the dollar, look what happened dollar gets changed unemployment, inflation, almost bank rupt. Muldoon was trying to save the country not hold on to power

  • This video sums up the 1984-85 political climate and govt. of NZ- excellent!- better than any news-media collage. Thankyou so much!

  • ahh muldoon, you make studying so much fun

  • @trevorx1960 Trevor, I have been a National (conservative) supporter from teens to now (20+ yrs), and I believe this was THE turning point for NZ. However, was it the best turning point? It created untold unemployment, untold inflation, untold youth suicide, &c., all of which New Zealand had never seen before.

So, TVNZ, it may've been right, but has NZ changed for the better in 27 years?? I will always vote National, and I'd like to say YES!

  • Gidday TrevorX: I guess the Socialist People's Republic O Aoteroa is still a way off- what we went through in the 80's was both necessary and unavoidable. Welcome to the real world.
