Beltane was/is a traditional time for gatherings. In the UK there are several hundred festivals every year of which Glastonbury is the most famous. They are almost entirely commercial. In the 1980s there was a calender of Free Festivals. No admission was charged. The events were unlicensed. Stonehenge Free Festival at the summer solstice was the most popular, but the authorities aided by violent police actions managed to prevent free gatherings and the festival at Stonehenge from 1985. The british government/police displayed their characteristic uncivilised brutality by physically attacking and imprisoning over five hundred people on their way to the festival on June Ist 1985, rather than allowing the festival to take place. The convoy of people lived in vehicles which were smashed up by police. The event became known as "the battle of the beanfield"...one of the traces of this event in contemporary folklore exists in the form of a song by the Levellers.
Other free festivals far smaller in scale numbering one or two events per month in the UK continued up until 1992 or so culminating in the Castlemorton festival near Malvern, England which was huge. It featured on UK TV news most nights with the usual shock horror stories pedalled by the joyless, unimaginative tabloid press. Thereafter the Castelmorton site was raided by the police who confiscated sound systems and made arrests. Soon after, the officer in charge of police in the area commented there had been less trouble at the event compared to similar numbers of people in local towns. Micheal Hesaltine, a prominent member of the UK government at the time commented initially that the festival appeared to be young people having a good time.....he was soon to be seen saying that such events could not be allowed to happen again. Within a year free gatherings of people in the UK at unlicensed festivals had been prevented. "Free parties" which consist of djs playing records for one or two nights began to happen. The free party scene based around computer assisted dance music faced the same attacks by the authorities and police as the live-music based free festivals. In 1994 the UK government introduced laws that specifically targeted repeatative beat music and gave the police specific powers to arrest people attending raves and to confiscate sound equipment. In the UK people are not allowed to spontaneously gather for these events. Violent actions are still perpetrated by the police to this effect against what is a form of cultural entertainment, redolent of how tribal Ghost Dancing was outlawed on American Indian reservations. The system of UK governance does not recognise the concept of citizenship: there is no written constitution in the UK, rights can be taken away by Parliament who seem to answer to the tabloid press. Wars are engaged to promote what is termed democracy yet the word does not appear to be understood. The middle classes generate a self serving media that ultimately destroys civilisation by targeting parts of society deemed dispensible. Civilisation is defined here as being the abilty to maintain a stable society and culture, not the usual definition which is a militarised country forming an empire followed by collapse. Similarly, the cliche of civilised, cultured professional middle classes is largely thwarted when it is seen that they support brutal repressive actions at home and abroad and do nothing to stop it, they simply allow others to do the killing for them....and allow the police to kill on occasion persons on protests or those misidentified in other circumstances, as in many other countries. The UK establishment has little if anything to teach the world about democracy and much to learn. When Glastonbury became mainstream the media and the laggards who derive their cultural guidelines therefrom realised what incredible life affirming events festivals are. Well, nearly- commercial festivals with the high degree of regulatory compliance and commercial inspiration can sanitise that which brings meaning to the concept- the free association of people to gather together.

It IS the real and original "orrible" top chap and good old mate of mine. and re the earlier post, he was horse drawn for years (he was our neighbour) and they ARE his own teeth :-)
