This is a coffee cup Stirling engine running in reverse on top of a dewar of liquid nitrogen. This creates a ~225 K temperature difference to drive the Stirling cycle.

  • Yes, but it's more efficient to use the nuclear, geothermal, or hydro power to make electricity and just use the electricity. Making LN2 would add another energy conversion to the process of producing electricity, and there is always a penalty associated with energy conversions.

  • I don't know of Mr. Boese. A number of auto manufacturers have built cars that are powered by Stirling engines using gasoline combustion for heat. It would be really impractical to use liquid nitrogen as a fuel because it takes a lot of energy to produce liquid nitrogen compared to the energy that can be produced by a Stirling engine using liquid nitrogen.

  • I do not know of any car engines that can run on liquid nitrogen, but I can tell you it would not be feasible for anything other than entertainment. Liquid nitrogen is much more energy intensive to produce than gasoline/petrol is, and the cost is also a lot greater for the output.

  • I'd do a duel fuel Stirling engine burning a hydrocarbon on one side and using liquid nitrogen on the other side-you could use the pressure generated by the expansion of the LN to run an alternator of course this only makes sense if you are using off peak excess power from Nuclear, Geothermal or hydro to make the LN
