How many times does the phrase, "And it came to pass," occur in one chapter of one book of the Book of Mormon?

Much praise goes to Youtube user thrond, who not only read the entire Book of Mormon without falling asleep, but also managed to constantly come up with new and interesting ways of saying, "And it came to pass."

Here is a sampling from just one chapter of the Book of Mormon's aptly titled Ether, so-called because it is guaranteed to put any reader to sleep.

As one blogger wrote, "If anyone has a hard time getting to sleep at night, or has insomnia, just try reading the Book of Mormon, and you should be good to go without any meds."

Mark Twain reviewed the Book of Mormon and said this of Joseph Smith's writing abilities:

"Whenever he found his speech growing too modern—which was about every sentence or two—he ladled in a few such Scriptural phrases as exceeding sore, and it came to pass, etc., and made things satisfactory again. And it came to pass was his pet. If he had left that out, his Bible would have been only a pamphlet."

Transcript:
Ether Chapter 15. And now I proceed to count. 23. Holy shit! The Book of Mormon is volume of holy scripture comparable to ether. He that wrote this record was Joseph Smith. I suppose he had no life. He wrote the book of Mormon for personal doctrines and profit. And now I shall play Mortal Kombat.

  • blame shiity translations like KJV (and most if not all translations) for this bullshit construct. "yiheyeh" from the hebrew starts many verses and those who've tried to find better ways to translate simply say it shouldn't be translated, because there word is merely there to indicate the predicate took place in the past.

  • The KJV is only indirectly to blame here. Presumably, Joseph Smith saw it in the KJV and thought it sounded old and scriptural, so he used it in his book over and over again. Whereas the Bible was translated from ancient Hebrew, the Book of Mormon was supposedly translated from lost Native American heiroglyphics, but was almost certainly just made up by Smith in English.

While the KJV uses the phrase "And it came to pass" in 1.45% of the verses, the BoM uses it in almost 20% of the verses.

    They are TOO DAMM FUNNY

  • LOL, I love the Mark Twain quote, it was exactly what I was thinking when I first read part of the Book of Mormon. It was like he was trying to write in 17th century English but didn't really know how so he threw a bunch of archaic-sounding language in there. Like me when I'm trying to do Shakespeare, I just put "-eth" onto the end of each verb :D

    MORTAL KOMBAT!!

  • "And it came to pass gas...."

  • Sega!
