When winter first hits hard, or when the weather can't make up it's mind what it wants to do. It is the fire that suffers most. We have had a lot of rain in the last couple of months. Then we got a snap freeze, trapping all the water in the standing and raised dead wood. It was literally frozen solid.

You don't always get sure fire the first time, that is why proper prep is so important. A little birch bark goes a long way too. Use what is in your area, and learn it the best you can. When you need it, don't be afraid to use it.
