A suggestion to make it really pop! Create a new adjustment layer on top of both the footage and the complete effect (or perhaps just the footage). And use turbulant distortion with a seperate mask around the area you want. This will give it that "distorting heat" look. I think it would really sell the effect better, make it look more realistic and blend it better with the background.

Good call. Though this video was actually a test for the look of the fire itself, not the compositing at all. So I didn't over-do the comp work so you can judge the actual fire better, without distraction by distortion or such. But for the real thing ultimately, your idea would fit indeed.
