Steve Gunn's recent solo album Boerum Palace, out now on Three Lobed Recordings, is a heady and heavy blend of '60s, '70s and traditional music made utterly contemporary and unique. Gunn is a veteran of a number of New York's most notable experimental groups, having played with the Magik Markers, Moongang, and in GHQ alongside Pete Nolan and Marcia Basset of Double Leopards. On Boerum Palace, Gunn has turned his formidable improvisational chops towards songwriting with results that are as far from the free-form freak-outs of his previous work as they are from traditional singer-songwriter fare. Tapping into traditions of Cosmic American Music, krautrock, prog and even, in his words, the cheese of classic rock, his songwriting is simple and direct, underscored by a subdued psychedelia that rewards returning ears. In addition to his solo work, Gunn plays in an improvisational duo with drummer John Truscinski and in the full-on rock band Orleans Gunn with Marc Orleans of Sunburned Hand of the Man. BOMBsessions met up with Gunn just before he participated in a series of tribute shows to the late Jack Rose.

  • by, "the cheese route", did anyone else understood that to imply a nod towards the string cheese incident? and not like the description of this video says, as a nod towards classic rock.

fans of string cheese call the band "cheese" and there's a definite vibe towards that type of stuff on Cryin' Eyes

Gunn imploys the repertoire of Fahey + beyond, they're both artists that rightfully stand on their own at this point in time.

  • @lipby -- I think he has become more widely known. On BoingBoing a lot of the comments mentioned Fahey.

  • @1noen1 - Probably. I think I'm just wishing Fahey was better known... maybe this kind of thing will help.

  • @lipby -- Not a rip off, a tribute.

  • I love it, though this version of "Dusted Mind" sounds absolutely nothing like the version that is up on Fina-Music. Why is that?

  • A little too close to John Fahey... cool, but kind of a ripoff.

  • cool stuff! i like the Fahey type guitar playing.

  • cryin eyes!

    thanx!
