Follow along as Art Jewelry magazine associate editor Kristin Sutter learns to use a jeweler's saw for the first time.

She's testing out a kit from Thomas Mann. You can read her review of the kit in the March 2010 issue of Art Jewelry magazine.

  • so whats the total elapsed time?

  • Not exactly sure - it's been a while. But I'd guess less than an hour from start to finish, I'd say.

  • As I have said before, I am a master goldsmith in the UK and saw piercing is one of my specialities. May I suggest that you try piercing with the saw frame body at right angles to your eyeline and pierce across the bench pin rather than piercing away from your face down the length of the pin.

  • Thank you for the helpful pointers! Kristin was sawing for the first time in that video, so it wasn't intended as a complete tutorial. She was using the body positioning and sawing techniques suggested in Thomas Mann's Learn to Saw kit that she was reviewing for the March 2010 issue of Art Jewelry magazine.

  • Thanks for your reply, yes I realised that the person sawing was new to saw piercing, but I keep seeing others who are said to be more experienced, sawing away from their face and I write in and suggest sawing across the bench pin. If you would like to see my work please just Google, my name, James Miller FIPG and you will see links to albums of my work online. There was also a photo of my work some while ago in your mag, beyond jewelry section.

  • Oh yes, I remember that beautiful Lily of the Valley piece! :) You should think about submitting an article or project for us on the proper techniques. I'm sure lots of jewelers would love to learn what you have to offer! For more information about submitting articles or pieces for our gallery, check out our Web site, and click on "Submit Content to the Magazine" under the "Magazine" tab.

  • Ping me! Please ping me!

  • It was quiet a while ago that your magazine showed my Lily of the Valley and since then I have had a book published showing much more of my unique work, perhaps you have seen it. I have not sent articles to your magazine in the past as I do not make jewelry, but if you are interested in showing more of my work please let me know and I will send you photo files with information.

  • Oh no! Hopefully with enough practice you'll see some improvement. And if not, maybe you should check out the kit by Thomas Mann. It definitely helped me.

  • That's a great tip. Rubber cement held the paper template in the video in place pretty securely. But it couldn't hurt to put your image directly on the metal!
