Patra Frame, ClearedJobs.Net's HR Specialist, gives tips on government workers transitioning to the civilian workforce.

Are you a government employee thinking of trying civilian employment? There's a real secret you know to doing this effectively. Certainly you should take advantage of the transition services that your agency uses, but as hiring managers will tell you many people leaving federal employment do not affectively present themselves. They don't really know what they want to do.
How do you ensure that does not happen to you? Take advantage of the people you already know who had left federal employment and are in the civilian sector by talking to them about their transition.
You want to talk to people who have made a very successful transition and you want to talk to people whose transition was rocky, who perhaps changed jobs a couple of times. What you need to learn in these discussions are the differences between those who made an easy transition and those who did not.
You need to think about this in terms of civilian roles that you might be interested in, types of organizations that you want to work in but the secret to a successful transition is to take advantage of the knowledge of past peers, co-workers, bosses, and friends who've already made that transition, so you can make your own transition easier and far more successful.
