Actually, bara means rose. It comes from "barazoku" meaning rose tribe, which is what the groundbreaking but not defunct Japanese gay magazine called the gay male community. (Lesbians were called "yurizoku", the lily tribe.)
Bara is different from yaoi or BL in that bara is made for men and BL is made for women. BL with muscly men is called "gachi muchi", meaning muscly/chubby.
