Rabona ist ein Begriff aus dem Fußballsport und bezeichnet einen Schuss, eine Flanke oder einen Pass, der durch Überkreuzen der Beine ausgeführt wird. Dabei bewegt sich das Schussbein hinter dem Standbein gegen den Ball.

Ein Vorteil dieser Schusstechnik kann sein, dass bei einem Flankenlauf der technisch stärkere Fuß verwendet werden kann, etwa wenn sich der Spieler als Rechtsfuß auf der linken Spielseite befindet und in die Mitte flanken will. Ein weiterer Vorteil kann der Überraschungseffekt sein. Außerdem wird der Ball dabei durch das Standbein gegenüber dem verteidigenden Gegenspieler abgedeckt. Aufgrund ihrer hohen technischen Anforderungen insbesondere bei hohem Lauftempo wird diese Schusstechnik selten angewandt und gilt eher als Kabinettstückchen.

Als erster Spieler, der die Rabona -- damals noch „Überkreuzschuss" genannt -- anwandte, gilt der Italiener Giovanni Roccotelli, der in den 1970er Jahren für Ascoli Calcio spielte. Am 18. September 2002 überlistete Juan Carlos Valerón mit einem Rabona-Pass die Defensive des FC Bayern München, sodass Roy Makaay einschieben konnte. Dave de Jong erzielte beim DFB-Pokal-Spiel des VfL Osnabrück gegen die SpVgg Greuther Fürth am 21. August 2005 den 2:2 Ausgleich mittels eines Rabona-Tores.

In association football, the rabona is a method of kicking the football whereby the kicking leg is wrapped around the back of the standing leg—effectively with one's legs crossed.

There are several reasons why a player might opt to strike the ball this way: for example, a left-footed striker advancing towards the goal slightly on the right side rather than having the goal straight in front may feel that his shot power or accuracy with his right foot is inadequate, so will perform a rabona in order to take a better shot. Another scenario could be a left-footed winger sending a cross while playing on the right side of the pitch without having to turn first.

Another reason why a player could perform a rabona might be to confuse a defending player, or simply to show off his own ability as it is considered a skillful trick at any level.

The first filmed rabona was performed by Pelé in the São Paulo state championship in 1957.[citation needed]In the 1970's this move was simply called a "crossed-kick."[1][2] Contemporary players who have used the skill effectively in competition include Diego Maradona, Rivaldo, Derek O'Brien, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ángel di María, Ricardo Quaresma, Ronaldinho, Didier Drogba, Alessandro Del Piero, Juan Sebastián Verón, David Villa, Eric Cantona,Nani,Wesley Sneijder,Zlatan Ibrahimović.
