These photos show what the village was like, the people who taught and supported the school, and many landscape shots. Many of the pictures were contributed by Adam Farabee and Claire Andryshak. The music is "World On Fire," by Sarah McLachlan and "You Made It," by DJ Shadow (featuring Chris James). These songs set the tone for the experience I had my first year of teaching in the Alaskan Bush.

  • Hi there... Did you get in touch with anyone about what to bring and what not to bring? Make sure you have a good pair of muck boots and rain gear. Wait til you see the river; it is breathtaking...

  • arica72, what do you teach in Alaska?

I am finishing up my English degree. How would I go about trying to teach in rural Alaska?

  • Have you looked on the Alaska Teacher Placement site? You should set up your profile and post your resume. There a lot of jobs posted and you can contact the districts; some may contact you. That's pretty much it...

  • I lived in Aniak 50 years ago. I wouldn´t trade my life in Aniak for anything. These are great photo´s and they bring back some pleasant memories....no tv no radio the best times of my life.....thanks

  • Good video. Brings back many memories, lived there for six years as a teacher in the 90s. Great place, great people. Just had some folks stop by tonight that used to live there and have family still there. It was good to hear about some of the folks. A part of my heart is still there--hope to get back some day.

  • Great Video!

  • Most Alaska districts have no official music program. what they hope for is that the teachers they have teaching Elementary School, Middle School, or one of the core academics in high school will teach their students music class in addition to their regular teaching job.

  • Hi, I'm PincheChitra in Seattle. I just accepted a Science/Math position a t Akiak High School for this coming year of 2009/2010.

  • Hi, I'm PincheChitra in Seattle. I just accepted a Science/Math position a t Akiak High School for this coming year of 2009/2010. I found them at a Job Fair. Also, register with ATP (Alaska Teaching Positions) like arica72 said. I got two other offers through them.
