Some of the comments here are silly. This piece is intensely lyrical, conservative, even. It will endure. Think of it as a mid-20th century equivalent to the music of the Ars Subtilior. This work is, in essence, Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire articulated in a mature post-serial language coupled with an Asian ethos and married to Char's exquisite Surrealist poetry. It's a perfect blend of sensibilities and a jewel of 20th century musical art. Those that don't appreciate it are just "not there" yet.

@lifeisart37 and @2c26, This stuff isn't for everyone, but there is lots to appreciate besides "originality for the sake of originality". (Though I also think consciously breaking away from tradition was a good thing, given Boulez's context) Boulez and others challenged the late Romantics, writing music according to objective mathematical principles instead of trying to puppeteer your emotions. We're left to look for patterns and meanings ourself.

May I quote Sondheim?
"What matters is the means not the ends
And that is the state of the art today" - Sunday in The Park
Originality should never be a goal in itself. Anyone can be "original" whatever that means. I agree, and highly doubt that anyone in the future will listen to this for anything but amusement.

It's of its time, but transcends it. Pretentious to say on a youtube thread perhaps, but this is genuinely a work of genius.

Yes, I think it's very beautiful. But ultimately: who knows?
Yes, I honestly think this music will be appreciated in 200 years time! This is no curiosity nor an amusement. This is high-order art. If you cannot grasp it, your sons and daughters will.

thank you for posting this! the beauiful tone colours in this piece are soothing. i do not claim to understand the piece, but someone who cannot appreciate its beauty must be deaf or narrow-minded.
