Hey wearechange, first of all, respect to the indie media in general.

Secondly, (but more importantly) this "playing in to the cops hands" notion is more typical pacifist garbage that ultimately creates a culture of complicity. I respect peaceful protest and often practice it, but I don't limit myself to it, and I take issue with pimping peaceful protest as the only way to go. Black bloc stunts are very polarizing, but break through the apathy and complicity, regardless of personal politics.

We tried many times to talk to the Black Bloc before but could never get anyone to discuss the merits of that tactic.

Half of the people here are panhandlers from Granville Street. They refuse to work and want Goverment handouts constantly. Its a joke. I think these people are fucking jokes and it is an embaressmant to Canada that we have these fucking tools.

What else is a fucking joke is people waving a flag and painting their face red, getting drunk and thinking they're "Patriots"

We saw more idiots in red face paint than black ski masks over the 2 weeks. seriously.

The majority of these fake patriots don't even vote or get politically active, meanwhile the country gets carved up by foreign multinationals and the citizens robbed of the country's incredibly rich resources.

Wearing a mask isn't cowardly. It's basic safety in a protest. Police target specific individuals, ones they think are leading the marches. If anonymity is used, it's more difficult for them to distinguish individuals.

Cowardly? No, it's survival. It takes a lot of balls to fight the police.

I've been in mosh pits that have been more physical than this.. looked like a giant tug of war or capture the flag game between punks and cops.

I can understand people at this point wanting to vent and make their voice heard and I support that 100%.. but I question the effectiveness of this method..

I often think are these types of protest actions feeding the demand for more of these types of riot jackboot cops? Justifies expenditures made to toward their system and ability to buy new toys?

Doesn't it seem more likely that run-away security spending will continue for as long as the canadian public remain passive and terrified of imaginary terrorists?

The black bloc at the opening ceremonies was legit (I was in it), just a lot of pissed of locals and their supporters who weren't content with polite complaining. It's the future of capitalism, polarizing society like this. But the security budgets are drawn up and rationalized years before we get together.

if international bodies that facilitated international cooperation didn't exist (incl. G8/G20, UN, WTO etc.), there would be immeasurably more war, poverty, and corruption worldwide (they allow for peaceful resolution for complex problems and act as a deterrent to rouge states that could threaten the stability of the many regions of the world). also, the standard of living we lucky few enjoy would decline to levels far from peachy (or get so expensive that only the wealthy could afford it)
