A giant has passed from the earth with the death of Joe Chiodo on the 26 August. This is a video of photos over the years including th last night at Chiodo's in 2005. As Josh Comer put it Joe was the "Lion in Winter." Josh also wrote the best eulogy:
"His vision and personality built what may have been the best bar in the whole world. From this many lasting connections were formed. Friendships, lifelong memories, experiences that had to be lived to be believed. The little tavern was the center of a very big universe of people from across the globe. And Joe Chiodo was always at the center of the little tavern.

Tony said it best in his Chiodo's Tavern video, "His like we shall never see again!"
Rest in peace Joe. Thanks for the memories!

  • Great job Tony. I miss the place and all the people.

  • @burgh58 Nice! Great memories.

  • @privateclem When my buddies and me were in our late teens, we had gained Joe's trust, Joe would serve us our under-age beers inside the bar at that time but, he kept an eye on us and kept us out of trouble. He didn't hesitate to teach us how to drink and be gentlemen at the same time. These were lessons learned through Joe's advice that I've been carrying till this day.

  • @burgh58 I was born in Homestead hospital, and family lived in Munhall. I haven't been back since I was in 15 in 1983, but I remember my uncle taking me there while he had a beer at Chiodos. If you haven't read Art Rooney Jr.'s book about his family and the Steelers, you have to buy it. He wrote about Joe in it. Wish I could have had a beer at Chiodos before he passed.

  • Memories? Yes, the best. The grape arbor out back on a hot summer day with a cold pitcher. Joe. Friends and laughing. Joe. Endless hours of shuffle board. Joe. The Mystery Sandwich. Joe. I graduated from Steel Valley HS in '75. Joe allowed a few of my buddies and me to have an occasional under-age-beer or two out back during that summer. Great guy. "JOE, IF THEY HAVE YOUTUBE IN HEAVEN AND YOU READ THIS ..... THANK YOU."

  • Oh my gosh, I am so homesick now. My dad took me there for my first (legal) beer and a mystery sandwich - and a plate of halushki. My sister's first engagement ring was up there somewhere in all the memories too...

  • The mean-spirited remark was entirely unnecessary.

  • Joe, you were the consummate gentleman and host. You WERE Chiodo's! Great memories... God bless you forever in His presence. Jim Wilson & The Professor

  • I love the mystery sandwich!

  • Glad we have this to remember!

    Thanks Tony!
