Al Jolson performing the classic 'Toot, Toot, Tootsie!'. Fantastic performer, fantastic voice - I wish I could whistle like that! Taken from the 1927 film 'The Jazz Singer' credited as the first feature-length 'Talkie' film.

  • i don't know why but i'm always creeped out by this video

  • @sizableone Because of this movie we have talking pictures today. If they hadn't tried it, it wouldn't be nearly as good as it is today. It's taken since 1927 to get sound/film syncronization where it is today. You may not like it, but it was a revolutionary film.

  • @Jolson1950 Definitely! People may not like The Jazz Singer, but if no one had dared to do a talkie, would we have them today? At first, many people thought it took away the art and ambience of movie making (Chaplin didn't make a talkie until The Great Dictator in 1940).

  • THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER EVER !!!!!

  • It's probably for the best that the first words spoken in movie history weren't during one of the blackface scenes.

  • @sizableone Jolson was one of the all time great entertainers of the 20th Century and although you may not like this type of entertainment you cannot dismiss it. If you don't like something then don't watch it.

  • It's baffling to the outside world how this awful noise could ever be classified as music or even entertainment. This gibbering shrieker was as phony as his blackface.

  • @identchannel This is a clip from a DVD of the film, I think they restored it but that wouldn't affect the frames per sec. I think they had real issues with frames per sec in those days lol like in every silent film.
