I wake the next morning to an empty bed beside me. I sit up, rubbing my eyes.
I get up and head downstairs. Nothing.
I walk through the house, and turn up empty handed. I hear the front door open and see Claire walking in. she smiles and kisses my cheek.
Claire: Hey, good morning. I thought you'd be showered and changed by now. Lazy much?
She hands me a Dunkin Donuts coffee, I smile and kiss her cheek.
- You know it. You worried me this morning. I thought you fell in the ocean. Again.
She glares at me, narrowing her eyes.
Claire: One time!
I chuckle, as she turns her attention back to the box of munchkins she put on the table. I pull her into my arms so her back is resting against my chest. I rest my chin on her head thinking. I remember that day so clearly. Claire was only nine. We were spending the day at the beach like we had so many times before. We were up on the rocks, just relaxing when Jared and Kim showed up. I was talking with them, when I noticed how quiet Claire was being. She was never that quiet, still isn't, especially with Jared. They're always joking around. I turned and saw she wasn't there. Panic immediately struck me. There was no way she'd be able to be on the shore, she couldn't have gotten around us. I gazed down at the water and the panic washed over me. I instantly dived in, and opened my eyes, ignoring the burn of the salt. I looked around me in every direction until I saw her. Her leg wrapped in seaweed, and not moving. I swam to her as fast as I possibly could, and ripped the tangled mess from her leg. I wrapped my arms around her and swam to the surface, as soon as we came up she was gasping for air and ghastly coughing. I handed her to Jared who wrapped her in a towel, as I pulled myself up onto the rocks. As soon I was stable on the rocks, I grabbed her pulling her on my lap and hugging her tight, never planning to let go.
I later found out I wasn't paying attention and she slipped. She fell in and got caught on the seaweed, unable to free herself. I was so terrified that day, and I know she was too. I looked away for a split second and I almost lost her. It's why I'm ten times more protective of her, than I used to be, and I will admit before I was pretty bad. Because I screwed up she was put into danger. I vowed from that day on I would always protect her, and keep her out of harm's way. I will admit that's not always an easy task with her, but I always manage to keep my promise, and I will continue to until the day I die. Nothing like that will ever happen to her again, not on my watch. Although it does drive her a little crazy when we spend our summers on the beach. I'm with her constantly, and am watching her every move. I never let her out of my sight especially by the water, which I refuse to let her in with out me. I know I sound like the annoying big brother, but I'd never forgive myself if something happened to her, it's my job to protect her, so it's what I'll do.
I snap out of my trance and look won at her. She's looking up at me worried.
Claire: You ok? You zoned out for a minute.
- Yeah, I was just thinking of something.
Claire: You sure?
- You're in my arms, I'm perfect.
She smiles up at me, and kisses me, which I happily return.
That night I stand in my kitchen stirring the pasta in my pot, and sipping my diet coke. Quil's coming over for dinner tonight, and pasta is his favorite, so bring on the Italian mood. I reach for the strainer when I hear the front door swing open. I turn around to yell at Quil for the slam, but see the doorway empty.
- Uncle Sam?
- If this is one of the pack you're getting a face full of this soda!
Nothing. I grow more nervous. If it was one of the pack, I would've heard a laugh at that. I slowly creep forward to the door, and cautiously look out. No one. Maybe it was the wind? I have a tendency not to close this door all the way sometimes. Habit from always having Quil trailing behind me. I shake my head and close the door.
???: You need to learn what a lock is kid.
I jump and turn around, my eyes instantly widening.
