Merry recorded this before Betty Everett recorded her hit version the same year. There is another version, by Ramona King, that some have claimed to be the original (I've also uploaded it here), but it was proven to be be released in 1964, after Betty's version.

  • The first...and undoubtedly the best...version...thanks for this one...

  • @thecountofbasie You're welcome.

  • God, why can't the young black women today sing like this woman. Damn, Merry is awesome. I am a white chick that has lived in the dark for 45 years. (tears are crying on my face). I never new this was the woman who sang back up for Mick Jagger. Pleazzzzzze, bring back singers like this. The young generation today has no clue. Help them!

  • I kinda think Amy Winehouse copied Merry's vocal style!

  • The lungs this woman has. Beautiful.

  • Crimen Sollicitationis

  • @ccbs82 I didn't know that...dripping with soul and emotion...doesn't get much better than this

  • @luvureally Yeah...the gospel is the real flavor that made it all stand out. Yes it has changed into a homogenized brew of soulessness.

  • @luvureally Yes it has... Never knew it would get like this, after growing up in such richness of music in all genres. Mainstream music nowadays is just LOST and CLUELESS...no real grassroots or substance anymore. Sad.

  • @dggd True statement. And don't forget about gospel. 99% of those soul women of yesteryear started their musical journey in the church. The music has been homogenized into soulless, bland gruel.

  • Hard to believe she was only 15 when she recorded this.

  • I ratter like Betty song!
