LOl i dont know what the big deal is. If it was meant as a racial slur or stereotype he woulda said "eat watermelons" or "steal watermelons" cuz "grow watermelons" or "pick watermelons" would b for mexicans XD ... people need to lighten up.

Oh and also, if you really want to know what I'm talking about (the left wing media), watch the movie Media Malpractice. You can find it either on here or Netflix streaming. Also, look at how the media is treating Herman Cain right now for sexual harassment allegations back in the 90's. 2 women made the allegation, there was an investigation (in the 90's), and he was found innocent of the charges. But do you hear them reporting that last tidbit of info? It's insulting once you start noticing.

@1JONATHAN I agree that he wasn't being racist, but rather he was just referencing something from his home state. The amazing part of the clip is AS SOON as Rather said "watermelons", Matthews jumped in to cut him off. In the days following, Matthews was making excuses for Rather saying stuff like "Oh that's no big deal" (paraphrasing). The left wing media (inc. Matthews & Rather), have ran the word "racist" into the ground so much that the word is so meaningless now.Which is sad and hypocritical.

@1JONATHAN I still see bunches of Tyler roses sold on street corners in Texas though not as often. If you can't sell them, you just can't sell anything.
In Texas Watemelons are often sold by the side of the Road by people of all colors. Dan Rather is from Texas. His reference is uniquely Texan, and thus doesn't make sense to those who never lived in the state.
For people from Texas selling watermelons in summer is supereasy and thus if you can't sell them in Summer you're a terrible salesperson.
For people from elsewhere it sounds racist, because Watermelon in is thought of as a Black thing. Everyone enjoys watermelon in Texas.

Watermelons isn't racist. Racist would've been: "He couldn't sell watermelons, grape Koolaid, or a fresh bucket of Church's."
